Food Safety Bill Update Omits BPA Ban, Relief For Small Farmers

A bipartisan congressional committee released an updated version of the Food Safety Modernization Act this week.

Some provisions that didn't make it into this version are those offering relief to small farmers, exempting them from some of the bill's new regulations.

Also missing was a ban on Bisphenol-a (BPA) in food and beverage containers.

Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA), one of the proponents of a BPA ban, said she would present an amendment to ban the chemical in baby bottles and other products intended for infants before the floor vote.

The bill is slated for a vote after the legislative recess comes to an end next month.
