Update: H.R. 2112 Sent To House For Vote
Food safety and food assistance will suffer if H.R. 2112 is approved by Congress. H.R 2112, the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, cut funds from an array of food policy programs including the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service that checks foods for diseases like E. coli and Women, Infants, and Children, which provides nutrition to mothers and families.
The poor will be most affected by this bill, and as many as 130,000 seniors and 475,000 mothers-to-be, nursing mothers, and infants will not receive food from government services.
Sponsored by Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA), H.R. 2112 is geared towards reducing the national deficit. However, those concerned about food safety and about fighting hunger in America worry that the true cost of this bill comes at too high of a price.
