US House Passes Global Food Security Plan

The US House approved a global food assistance program on a vote of 370 to 33.

The bill is part of President Barack Obama's five-year Feed the Future initiative.

The measure would allow $1 billion in funding for food security programs in developing countries.

Lawmakers from big agricultural states threw their support behind the bill after language was added to protect current food aid programs included in the farm bill.

Programs like Food For Peace support domestic farms by sending food grown in the U.S. to countries in crisis.

The Senate will soon consider a companion version of the bill.
