Spring Has Sprung

No scandal in music seems to be more famous than the premiere of this ballet. The violent sounds and shocking imagery incited a riot in the concert hall. The ballet was described as a tale of pagan Russia and in this tale the tribal leaders have selected a young virgin to sacrifice to the gods of spring. The choreography was viewed by many to be overtly sexual and was partly to blame for the rancorous response by original audiences. Another famous composer was present who pleaded with the audience to allow the music to be heard. This composer had also played the 4-hand piano reduction of the work with the composer.
