Hank Williams Songbook, A New Thelonious Monk Biography, And More

• This week's Afterglow program The Hank Williams Songbook features interpretations of the country-music king by Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Dinah Washington, Cassandra Wilson and other jazz, pop, and R & B performers.

• Robin D.G. Kelley's Thelonious Monk biography is finally out and is earning some early raves from posters at the Organissimo jazz discussion forum. Chris Albertson has some pictures of Kelley's Wednesday-night signing party.

• Recently I devoted a Night Lights show to Sonny Rollins's 1957 recordings. This week Marc Myers of Jazzwax fame posted an interview lowdown from Sonny himself on the genesis of one of those recordings, the trio album Way Out West .

• Concord has just released the third and final box-set installment of John Coltrane's Prestige recordings. This one is a 5-CD featuring Trane as a sideman with Red Garland, Mal Waldron, Elmo Hope and others. If I were you, I'd order it through Best Buy.
