Where Hoosiers stand on public health

Noon Edition airs on Fridays at noon on WFIU.

Public Health Day at the statehouse recently highlighted many issues facing Hoosiers. The initiative was part of a study conducted by Governor Eric Holcomb’s Public Health Commission and highlighted key issues with Indiana’s public health system.

According to the Indiana Department of Health, cancer, heart disease, and respiratory diseases are the three leading causes for death among Hoosiers. Many of these cases are directly linked to tobacco use and obesity. Hoosier smoking rates are the highest in the nation and over 34% of Hoosiers reported being overweight according to the same source.

Chronic diseases such as the ones listed above are the leading cause for disability and death in Indiana and the U.S.

On Noon Edition this Friday we will talk with public health experts about the event at the statehouse, ways to stay healthy, and more.

You can follow us on Twitter at @NoonEdition or join us on the air by calling 812-855-0811 or toll-free at 1-877-285-9348. You can also send questions for the show at news@indianapublicmedia.org.
