The debt limit has been reached and many wonder what now?

Noon Edition airs on Fridays at noon on WFIU.

The U.S. national debt continues to rise, passing the debt limit once again. In December of 2021, the national debt limit was raised by $2.5 trillion making the new ceiling $31.4 trillion. Just over a year later, the limit was reached.

In response, the Department of the Treasury announced a “debt issuance suspension period” in which it can borrow additional funds without passing this limit by taking “extraordinary measures.” These measures can be found on the Congressional Budget Office’s website and are listed here

It is estimated that if the debt limit is unchanged, the ability to borrow using these measures will be exhausted sometime between July and September of this year and the U.S. will not be able to pay its bills.

This Friday on Noon Edition, we will talk with finance experts about the ongoing issue of the debt ceiling and arguments about it in Congress.
