Former President Donald Trump was arrested Tuesday after he was indicted last week. The charges against the former president deal with his involvement in payments given to pornographic film performer Stormy Daniels to keep quiet after she claimed to have an affair with him.
While paying an individual to keep quiet isn’t illegal, other potential crimes could come from paying hush money. One of these crimes involves Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen receiving monthly payments as reimbursement for paying Daniels’ lawyer and falsely marking them as legal expenses.
The other potential crime deals with his 2016 campaign as arguments could be made that the large payout served as an improper donation to his campaign because silencing Daniels could have benefited his candidacy for president.
Trump is the only federal official to be impeached twice and is now the only former U.S. president to be charged with a crime.
