What China’s support of Russia means for the war in Ukraine, global economies

Noon Edition airs on Fridays at noon on WFIU.

China’s President Xi Jinping met with Russian President Vladmir Putin last month, showing support for Putin and Russia. Russia’s war on Ukraine began just over a year ago and as a result Russia has received much economic and political opposition from the U.S., NATO, and the European Union (EU).

Economic sanctions and reprisals have been placed on Russia by the U.S. and many European countries and many U.S. and international companies have shut down or removed their stores and businesses located in Russia.

Ties between Russia and China have benefited both countries economically. According to a report from NPR, China now accounts for about two-thirds of Russian exports and Russia has become China’s top oil supplier.

Despite backlash and criticism, President Xi stated that this decision was a “strategic choice.” Putin had been issued an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes just days before the two met.

This Friday on Noon Edition, we will talk with guests about Russia’s and China’s ties, what impacts it will have on the war in Ukraine, global economic impacts, and other related issues.
