New laws take effect July 1st

Noon Edition airs on Fridays at noon on WFIU.

Many new laws go into effect in Indiana on July 1.

The new laws include higher electric vehicle taxes and lower prescription drug prices. This would require insurers to pass a minimum of 85% of rebates negotiated with manufacturers for covering the drugs. It is estimated that individual Hoosiers will save hundreds on prescription drugs.

Hoosiers are expected to save some more money this year as major tax cuts were introduced as well as reduction of hospital costs.

Some other new laws cover some recent hot button issues that have dominated headlines. One law will now allow pharmacists to prescribe birth control to patients after conducting a health screening. Other laws include additional identification for absentee voting, establishing a review process for books, and removing access to transgender care for minors.

Students will also be affected by the new laws. Families of high school seniors will now be required to fill out the Free Application for Federal Aid by April 15 and more students will be enrolled in the 21st Century Scholars Program. K through 12 educations also received major funding for this upcoming year.

A full list of proposed bills can be found here.

This Friday on Noon Edition, we will talk with lawmakers about these new laws taking effect next month.
