Speaker McCarthy, Trump, and more could play big roles in 2024

Noon Edition airs on Fridays at noon on WFIU.

Kevin McCarthy (R-California) was removed as Speaker of the House after 216-210 vote last night. The historic vote, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida), consisted of eight Republicans and all Democrats. The vote came days after a late deal was made to avoid another impending government shutdown. This is the first time a speaker has been successfully removed by vote of the House.

Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana) and chairman of the Judiciary Committee Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) have announced their campaigns for speaker earlier this afternoon. Discussions are expected to be held by next Tuesday.

With this announcement and the ongoing trials of former President Donald Trump, many have questions about how these unprecedented events will impact a pivotal election year.

This Friday on Noon Edition, we will talk with political science experts about these historic events and the impact they could have.
