The Bloomington Wheeler Mission Shelter announced earlier this month it would be stop shelter services for women, starting this Friday.

Wheeler will continue to offer services, including meals, for women experiencing homelessness. Sheltering and other services for unhoused men will be unaffected.

The expansion will not increase bed capacity, but it will allow the shelter to move some of its 130 beds into the new building.

Wheeler Mission has 92 beds available in the emergency shelter for men and 40 beds available for women.

Nearby business owners oppose the expansion and say there has been an increase in crime in recent years.
