An unhoused Bloomington woman has been charged with murder in connection with a shooting earlier this month at a homeless encampment near the Wheeler Mission on the city’s west side.

Bloomington police have been looking for 41-year-old Evelynn L. Kuuleilehaunani since Jan. 9, when officers responded to reports of a man being shot and located a 52-year-old man dead inside a tent.

According to a Bloomington Police Department release, early this morning, officers determined Kuuleilehaunani was inside a residence in the 500 block of Basswood Dr. About 1 a.m., Kuuleilehaunani was seen exiting the residence and was taken into custody without incident.

Witnesses on the scene on Jan. 9 told police Kuuleilehaunani had been in a relationship with the victim and that she had been standing outside his tent arguing with the victim, who was inside the tent.

Witnesses said they saw Kuuleilehaunani holding a revolver during the incident. According to the release, “Kuuleilehaunani reportedly raised the firearm above her head and fired one round up into the air, then lowered the gun and fired multiple rounds into the victim’s tent.”

Kuuleilehaunani reportedly gathered her belongings and fled the scene. The witnesses checked on the victim and saw that he had been shot and called 911.

Kuuleilehaunani is being held at the Monroe County Jail.
