Columbus-based Cummins is asking entrepreneurs for ideas on how it can reduce its carbon footprint.

The engine manufacturer is modeling the competition after a similar program it started in the United Kingdom. It resulted in Cummins adopting several new energy initiatives, including converting gas waste from the engine testing process into energy the company could use on site.

Indirect Purchasing Leader Priscila Mendes says the goal is for Cummins to start purchasing products from companies with winning submissions.

"If their solution is selected, we select a location for the trial," Mendes says. "So we get the product from them, we install it, we monitor its work see if it delivers what we think it will."

Cummins could then decide to expand the use of the products to other locations.

Companies can submit ideas online through Friday. The best proposals will move on to a final round in April.
