A Bloomington activist is raising money to build a community center for the LGBTQ community.
Melanie Davis says she’s raised $2,400 so far on a GoFundMe page, with the goal of reaching $18,000. Her home is already stocked with donations for the center.
“The living room and dining room are full, and I’ve got a heap of donated clothes in my bedroom and bathroom,” Davis says.
Davis envisions the center helping LGBTQ people find stable housing.
“Still here in Bloomington, kids are being disowned by their families while they are still in high school, and having to find someone’s sofa to live on," she says.
The center would also do outreach, educating people on LGBTQ issues.
Davis wants the community center to be in or close to downtown, but thus far she hasn’t been able to secure a site.
