Bloomington Moves Forward With Automated Trash Pickup

The city of Bloomington is moving forward with plans to adopt an automated trash system.

A group of Bloomington residents and city employees make up the Sanitation Modernization Advisory Committee. They released their recommendations to Mayor John Hamilton this week.

The report suggests moving away from the city's current system, which requires workers to lift trash cans.

"They do recommend going to these automated trucks that lift the trash on its own," Hamilton says.

The new system would do away with trash stickers and instead require residents to purchase a trash bin in one of three sizes. The trucks will also pick up single streamed recycling.

The proposal must be approved by the Utilities Service Board and City Council.
