Authorities in Muncie are blaming a new batch of heroin for causing a spike in overdoses.
Muncie Police Chief Joe Winkle said Tuesday he was aware of 13 overdoses and three related deaths in that city between Friday and Sunday.
Delaware County Sheriff Ray Dudley recently had officers trained and equipped with Narcan, a medication used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
One of his officers was dispatched to a local tire shop where an overdose was reported.
"Due to the fact that all our deputies are carrying the Narcan kits, he was able to assist the Muncie Police Department and revive both the male and female in that vehicle," Dudley says.
Delaware County executive director of emergency medical services Jason Rogers says his staff administered 21 doses of the overdose antidote within the first five days of February.
Rogers said his staff typically sees a spike in overdoses every time a new batch of heroin hits the area.
