Members of a group called ‘Casino Free Vigo County' are opposing legislation that would move unused gambling slots from southeastern Indiana's Rising Sun casino to Terre Haute.
Terre Haute resident Jeanne Rewa is a member of the ‘Casino Free Vigo County' group. She says she doesn't think that a casino will help the economy in the long term.
"What I've seen is a lot of just accepting the figures given by the casino companies without really getting behind the math," Rewa says.
City officials are chipping away at a more than $8 million budget deficit over the next few years.
Mayor Duke Bennett says he believes an area casino will bring hundreds of new jobs along with a $150 million investment and no local incentives.
"I keep telling people, I'm all about the economic side of this, that's all it is. If you don't like gambling, don't gamble. But every other community that's got one loves it," Bennett says.
Ultimately, the fate of the casino lies at the Statehouse. A vote is scheduled Wednesday afternoon.
