The Monroe County Commissioners unanimously approved a measure Wednesday that would deliver funding to the Shalom Community Center.
The $22,000 dollar grant will help extend the center's hours to be open seven days a week. This comes after the city government and other local businesses pledged financial support to allow the center to offer weekend hours.
Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton introduced the initiative last month to tackle issues related to the city's homeless population. Hamilton wanted the city, county, and private sector to contribute to the $65,000 needed to run the center's extended hours for one year.
Hamilton says he expectsthe extended hours to start within the next few months.
