Vigo Co. Council Tables Vote On Income Tax Hike

Vigo County residents will have to wait longer to see if they'll have to pay a higher local income tax to help fund a new jail.

Council members were supposed to vote on increasing a local income tax Monday night. But after three hours of public comment and debate, council members became confused as to which version of the ordinance was read before a vote.

"Could we have an explanation as to why we have a discrepancy this evening? Is it from what was published in the newspaper? Because what was read is not what we were presented," council member Jim Mann said.

It turns out the original ordinance was published rather than the recently updated version.

Council members unanimously tabled the vote until another meeting.

The proposed increase would bump the tax from 1.25 percent to about 2.25 percent.

A quarter percent of the increase is temporary and meant to pay for a proposed $60 million county jail.

But many of the several hundred Vigo County residents spoke out against the tax saying more research is needed from independent sources before either the jail or the tax is approved.
