Seymour Native John Mellencamp Makes Donation To Hometown For Plaza

Mural artist Pamela Bliss says Mellencamp glorified Seymour as America’s “small town” in his iconic 1985 single.
Mural artist Pamela Bliss says Mellencamp glorified Seymour as America’s “small town” in his iconic 1985 single.

Artist John Mellencamp and his family announced they would be making a $50,000 donation to build a plaza around a recently completed mural of him in his hometown, Seymour, Indiana.

The mural stands 35 feet tall on the side of the local music shop, This Old Guitar.

The artist who painted the mural, Pamela Bliss, has depicted other famous Hoosiers as well.

She says Mellencamp’s donation to beautify the area surrounding the mural feels like a stamp of approval.

“You know, when you’re depicting someone, you want them to like it. You want them to feel like that represents them and they like it," Bliss says.

Of all the murals she’s painted, she says Mellencamp’s generated the most excitement from the public.

The date for the plaza’s completion has not yet been announced.
