Police arrested a Bloomington man on charges of criminal recklessness and possession of a handgun without a permit Monday after he allegedly fired an AK-47 pistol out of an apartment window.

A news release says officers responded to the Kingston Manor apartment building on the 3200 block of East Longview Avenue at around 11 a.m. Monday after multiple 911 calls about gunshots.

With the help of construction workers in the area, officers identified and detained three men allegedly seen exiting the apartment building after the gunshots were heard.

The release says one of the men, 22-year-old Malik P. Shaw, was allegedly holding a backpack containing a loaded AK-47 and a further search revealed suspected marijuana and pills in his sweatshirt pocket.

Officers searched the apartment pointed out to them by construction workers and found spent shell casings inside a bedroom.

According to police, detectives arrested Shaw after an interview. The other two men were interviewed and released.

Shaw is charged with criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, a level 5 felony; possession of a handgun without a permit and possession of a controlled substance, both class A misdemeanors; and possession of marijuana, a class B misdemeanor.

No injuries or damage to buildings was reported.
