Four new city council members began their terms on the Bloomington City Council at the start of 2020.

Those council members say they’re interested to see how the city’s newly finalized Unified Development Ordinance functions in practice.

While the amendment process to the UDO is finished, zoning districts still need to be mapped and a date for it to go into effect needs to be set.

Kate Rosenbarger is the city council representative for District 1. She says the city is currently conducting a housing study, which will generate more data about the future housing needs in Bloomington.

“It’ll be interesting to see how the UDO starts to play out once we have our effective date, and then what that housing study says we need, and if the UDO is fulfilling those needs,” Rosenbarger says.

Ron Smith, is the representative for District 3.

“In my mind, doing the housing study, that may prompt us to open the UDO,” Smith says.

The Housing and Neighborhood Development Department commissioned an outside company to complete the housing survey.

The next Bloomington City Council meeting is January 15.
