After many years of searching, a local Bloomington school is opening a new door for students.

The Project School (TPS), a public charter school for grades K-8, is opening a secondary building to increase the number of students at the school.

The school's philosophy is on whole-child education -- "teaching for the heart, mind and voice." Its main focus is for each and every student's goals to be met.

Every year, The Project School has a waiting list that is larger than its total student enrollment of close to 300 students.

Philanthropy and Outreach Director Amy Jackson, says the school won’t be able to accept every student on the waiting list, but that the new building will still provide more space for new faces.

“Even though we’ll still unfortunately be a lot of 'no’s', that we will be able to say 'yes' to so many more people who really want the services for their children," said Jackson.

She says the new building is on Washington Street near the original Project School on South Walnut Street and that it will expand over a three-year period to gain around 90 more students.

“We don’t want to expand at a speed or size beyond our ability -- the most important thing to us is that we keep fidelity to our mission and our vision and our core beliefs," said Jackson.

Their first classroom in the second building will open in August 2020.

The complete expansion will be complete in 2022.
