The Center for Biological Diversity says rapid human population increases have been extremely harmful to wildlife in North America.
That’s why the organization is distributing nearly 40,000 condoms across 10 cities, including Indianapolis, on Valentine’s Day.
The program is called the Endangered Species Condoms Project and it’s been around for 10 years. Its goal is to initiate conversations about human overpopulation and how it effects the environment.
Sarah Baillie is the Endangered Species Condoms Coordinator at The Center for Biological Diversity.
"The rate at which we're losing species is really disasterous," she says.
Baillie says the U.S population has a large impact of the global ecosystem.
“There are other countries that are growing faster, we are definitely consuming much more," she says.
The condoms are made of vegan materials and the packaging is made from recyclable materials. The packaging displays different animal phrases like, “Before it gets hotter, remember the Sea Otter.”
Baillie says this is meant to open the conversation of overpopulation with humor. She says the cities where condoms are being distributed on Valentie's Day were on a list of the 10 most sexually satisfied cities in the U.S.
"We figured if those people are getting lucky, we want to make sure they're safe when they do," she says.
The project also distributes condoms on other holidays like Earth Day, World Contraception Day and Halloween.
