Crews work on the road at Kirkwood and Washington after a water main break caused flooding in July of 2019.

The block of Washington Street from Fourth Street to Kirkwood Avenue in Bloomington is temporarily being converted from a one-way street into a two-way due to road construction.

The city is repairing crosswalks and installing bollards on Kirkwood Avenue.

The city said in a statement that the traffic pattern change on Washington allows access to Fourth Street businesses. The intersection at Kirkwood and Washington is closed as workers complete the project.

The intersection of Kirkwood and Grant Street is also closed, but a new crosswalk is complete on Indiana Avenue and should open Friday.

The city says 18 curb ramps, and 18 stamped concrete crosswalks should be installed by June 1. Kirkwood will then be repaved by the end of July.

The project was originally scheduled in mid-May, but was pushed up after the coronavirus pandemic canceled Indiana University's spring classes and residents were restricted to stay at home.

The city indicates that it is, "implementing and working with contractors to implement CDC protocols regarding physical distancing, hygiene, and disinfection of vehicles and equipment to protect workers and prevent community transmission of COVID-19."
