Franklin, DePauw, Lead IN Colleges In Rate Of Reported Rapes

A report from the U.S. Department of Education shows Franklin College reported the highest rate of reported rapes per 1,000 students in Indiana. Notre Dame University reported the highest total number in the Hoosier state with 15 reported rapes.

A Washington Post analysis shows Franklin College reported 2.8 rapes per 1,000 students in 2014, followed by DePauw University with 2.7 and Hanover College with 2.6.

Reed College, Wesleyan University and Swarthmore College reported the highest rates in the country in 2014.

The statistics show Indiana's largest universities in the middle of the pack among Indiana schools for rate of sexual assaults on campus. The Post story was based on 2014 data which comes from the 2015 Clery Act reports that track campus crime.

Because of inconsistent reporting methods, experts caution against using Clery Act data or information from the FBI's Uniform Crime Report to make comparisons between communities.
