Duke Energy Planning Solar Farm At Crane

Duke Energy plans a new solar-power investment in Indiana.

Duke is awaiting state regulatory approval for a solar farm at the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center. President Melody Birmingham-Byrd says it would be Duke's largest solar facility in Indiana, and its second solar project at a military base.

Duke already has a solar array at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

"There is some preliminary work that is taking place but the major construction doesn't begin until after we've received approval," says Birmingham-Byrd.

She's hoping for a green light from the state within the next few months, with an expectation of beginning to produce power by year's end. The facility would generate 17 megawatts, enough to power a thousand homes.

The installation would add about 30 cents to the average homeowner's monthly bill.
