The plant is called a 'corpse flower' because for a short time while it is in bloom, it produces the odor of a rotting animal.
A plant at the New York Botanical Garden bloomed Thursday afternoon and is expected to remain in bloom about 24 to 36 hours. A 'corpse flower' at the United States Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C. is a lso expected to bloom any time.
