If sentenced to death, the 21-year-old found guilty of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing will be executed at a federal prison in Terre Haute. He could also be housed there until his execution.
Sentencing for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev began Tuesday.
Indiana State University criminology professor Mark Hamm says there would be a lot of local attention if Tsarnaev comes to Terre Haute, but that after some time he would be just another inmate.
Hamm says the federal prison has a special unit for inmates convicted of terrorist-related offenses, with heightened security on communications.
"We've had guys be sentenced to the Bureau of Prisons who actually then write letters to, you know, al Qaeda of Europe or whatever," Hamm says. "That's the concern, so they have put them all together."
The Terre Haute prison is no stranger to high profile inmates — Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh was executed there in 2001.
