Some Bloomington residents are joining the call for a repeal of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
Opponents of the law protested in Bloomington Tuesday, after Governor Pence canceled his appearance at a local GOP dinner.
About 200 Hoosiers wearing ‘Repeal RFRA' buttons gathered in Karst Farm Park—across the street from local AMVETS where Pence was scheduled to speak.
Opponents of the bill like rally organizer Chris Wilson are calling on legislators to repeal it completely, instead of just clarifying that it doesn't allow businesses to discriminate.
"We're not going to take it and there's no place for inequality in our state," Wilson says.
The governor cancelled his appearance at AMVETS amid the RFRA backlash. Attorney General Greg Zoeller spoke in his place, and he made a short appearance at the rally before speaking at the GOP event.
"I don't get to vote yes or no," Zoeller says. "I'll defend our state every chance I get. That's the job of the attorney general."
State lawmakers are working to create new legislation that would clarify RFRA's intent. They hope to vote on that language by the end of the week.
