Gov. Mike Pence says outcry over a proposed government news agency is the result of, in his words, an "understandable misunderstanding."
The Pence administration will soon roll out what was first referred to as its "news agency" and what it now calls a news resource website that will provide press releases, audio and video.
Initial reports about the new website called Just IN sparked criticism and outrage at the local and national level.
But leading that effort are a managing and assistant managing editors, and the site will include an editorial board.
Pence says the website was only ever meant to be a resource, not a news source.
"My objective is simply to make sure that the people of Indiana and the media that serve the people of Indiana have ready access to all the information," Pence says.
House Speaker Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, says he thinks Just IN was an idea gone south
"It looked to me like it was a central clearinghouse for press releases and then somebody got carried away and decided it was going to compete with a free and independent press," Bosma says.
State Democratic Party Chairman John Zody says Just IN's creation trashes the constitution for Pence's selfish purposes.
No official launch date for the site has been announced.
