Gov. Mike Pence today quickly named a new head of the Indiana Department of Transportation after its commissioner resigned with little public notice.
Karl Browning submitted his resignation via email to the governor Wednesday morning, saying he was proud of his accomplishments but that it was "time to move on."
Browning has led the department since 2013 when the governor appointed him. He previously held the same position under then-Gov. Mitch Daniels from 2006 to 2009.
When asked about Browning's departure, Gov. Pence said it is his policy not to discuss personnel matters.
Instead, he issued a statement saying Brandye Hendrickson, INDOT's deputy commissioner, will take over for Browning.
"With more than a decade of executive experience in state government, Brandye Hendrickson has demonstrated a commitment to public service and a nearly unmatched depth of understanding of the Indiana Department of Transportation," Pence said in the statement. "I am confident that she will uphold the agency's mission and serve Hoosiers well as Commissioner."
Hendrickson has been in the position of deputy commissioner for INDOT since 2007. Prior to Browning's appointment in 2013, she served as the interim commissioner.
