Indiana farmers saw a record popcorn crop last year, according to a new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Farmers planted a total of 91,000 acres of corn used to make popcorn — more than ever before. The state's production totaled 432 million pounds of corn.
Greg Matli, the Indiana state statistician for the National Agricultural Statistics Service says some farmers were initially concerned that wet weather would affect production.
"I think if you look at the crop throughout the entire season, that there were some isolated problems, but the majority of the crop — it was just a great year for corn, whether it be regular corn for grain or popcorn," Matli says.
Though the crop value jumped up about 1 percent to just more than $81 million, the average price farmers received for their crop dropped about 13 percent.
Indiana is the second largest producer of popcorn in the nation.
