Indiana Republican leaders say they will work to clarify the Religious Freedom Restoration Act to ensure it does not allow discrimination, but some Democratic leaders are calling for the law's repeal.
House Speaker Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, and Senate President Pro Tem David Long, R-Fort Wayne, addressed the potential for changes to the law in a press conference Monday morning at the Statehouse.
The two say Gov. Mike Pence was unclear about the law when he appeared Sunday on ABC's "This Week" with George Stephanopoulos.
Bosma says both chambers would need to ratify any proposed changes to the law.
Long says it's a "small tribe" of RFRA proponents who say the law allows them to deny service to LGBT individuals, and he says that perception is wrong.
But House Minority Leader Scott Pelath, D-Michigan City, says Republicans rejected language that would have clarified RFRA during debate in the legislature. He says the measure was unnecessary.
Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane, D-Anderson, says the law should be repealed, but both Long and Bosma say that's unlikely.
