Mount Baldy, the dune at National Lakeshore park where an Illinois boy miraculously survived being buried for hours, is re-opening to the public for guided tours.
Mt. Baldy won't be opening up in its former capacity, as scientists maintain that the dune is covered in underground sinkholes.
But there will be park ranger led tours of the dune that focus on the scientific research that is happening there, including the various scientific tools used to survey what‘s underneath Mt. Badly.
"This is a brand new phenomenon of science that is happening right in our backyard," says Supervisory Park Ranger Bruce Rowe. "It really is this fascinating mystery that the scientists are trying to figure out."
Rowe says what‘s particularly interesting is that scientists have discovered that Mt. Baldy is actually covering up an ancient sand dune.
The park ranger guided tour is guaranteed sinkhole-free and has been determined completely safe.
The tours are being held Friday afternoons and select Sunday mornings.
Rowe also says the lack of foot traffic at the dune has allowed formerly indigenous plants to be restored to the area.
