The number of different breast cancers suffered by American women is expected to increase 50 percent by 2030, the National Cancer Institute reported Monday — and, while that statistic may seem startling, the institute is also giving researchers at Purdue University $8 million in hopes of combating that prediction.
The Purdue University Center for Cancer Research will receive those funds over the next five years. The National Cancer Institute has funded Purdue since 1978.
The institute also renewed Purdue's status as one of only 68 recognized NCI cancer centers in the country.
Tim Ratliffe, Director of the Purdue Cancer Center, says the grant's large sum speaks to the excellence of the staff there.
"It's a very special group of people that have special abilities to pursue cancer research," Ratliff says.
The grant will allow the center's focus groups to further pursue research in a wide range of common cancers and raise more money from the private sector.
