The Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs is in the process of interviewing candidates for a Women Veterans Coordinator for the state.
Veteran advocates say it's vital and they've been waiting since July when a law authorizing the position took effect.
The fastest growing veteran group in Indiana is women. Currently there are over 35,000 female veterans.
According to a report by the American Legion, women who serve don't always identify as veterans or know how to take advantage of resources.
Mary Cox, a U.S. Army veteran and Indianapolis small business owner, says she offers help to female veterans in need.
"I have the books right there that I'm able to give them information about going down to the VA and checking on things that are going on with them," Cox says. "I've met many women that served 20 years ago and never thought they deserved it."
Lisa Wilken, an Air Force veteran and the women's liaison for Indiana AMVETS, says having a woman veteran at the state level to be a champion for all Hoosier women veterans is crucial.
"Since women are now openly serving in combat roles, our exposure to different things is increasing and so our needs are increasing," Wilken says.
Wilken says female veterans are 9 times more likely to be homeless than non-women veterans. Women vets also have higher rates of Military Sexual Trauma and mental health issues like PTSD, according to the VA.
Indianapolis representative Karlee Macer, a member of the Indiana Veterans Affairs Commission, has been invited by the Department of Veterans Affairs to help interview finalists for the job.
The selection of a top candidate is expected in mid-January.
