Gas prices are the lowest they've been since 2009 and AAA expects they'll continue to drop through the New Year.
Prices at the pump in Indianapolis are dropping below $2 per gallon. Gas prices in the rest of the state are expected to follow.
AAA Spokesman Michael Green says that's giving consumers more money to spend elsewhere.
"AAA estimates that consumers are saving about $450 million a day on gasoline, compared to what they were paying earlier this year," Green says. "And that's going to help everyone with their holiday shopping, and that's definitely going to make their traveling expenses a lot less than what they've seen in recent years."
Cheap gas gave the small town of Santa Claus, Indiana a big boost this holiday season.
Executive Director of the Spencer County Visitor's Bureau Melissa Brockman says they saw a significant increase in the number of people coming to town to visit the Santa Claus Museum and have their letters postmarked at the Santa Claus post office.
"We're certainly a drive destination, so people who may depend on gas prices on whether or not they're going to make their trip, I think this year made that decision a little easier," Brockman says.
AAA predicts gas prices could fall another 10 to 15 cents by the New Year.
