With a near $25,000 deficit in 2014, the Humane Society of Johnson County is struggling to keep its doors open.
The organization, which runs on about $150,000 annually, currently lacks the funds to maintain its day-to-day operating expenses. Money coming in from donations, memberships and grants is running out this year in particular because of building maintenance issues, such as leakages.
The nonprofit will be forced to shut down as soon as May of next year if this trend continues.
Humane Society of Johnson County Board President Janet Gorrell says she is confident the group can persevere if community members continue to help.
"If we keep on the path that we are on right now--we've had more adoptions in the last week than we've had in some time—we can definitely…will definitely not close our doors in May," Gorrell says.
Gorrell adds that if people cannot donate to the Humane Society this winter, she encourages them to help one of the many other charities in need.
