Paoli Peaks ski slopes is opening today, two weeks later than originally planned.
Warm temperatures have prevented the business from making snow for the slopes.
Paoli Peaks Snow Sports Director Roy Inglis says he's been getting calls from people asking when the slopes would open since a cold snap in November.
"We've gotten many calls in the last week, to two weeks, especially with the holidays and kids off of school, business is ready to pick up and we're ready to get started," he says.
The recent temperature drops have been enough for Paoli Peaks to make several feet of snow, so they will open at 1 p.m. and remain open until 2 a.m. for a New Year's celebration.
Paoli Peaks expects they will be able to maintain the snow they've created after today, even if temperature warm slightly.
"Once we have a set [snow] base, we continually add to it. It's just establishing that base," says Sylvia Crick, Paoli Peaks group sales manager.
Crick says last year was a particularly good year for Paoli Peaks because the temperatures dropped early in the season, but she adds the setback this year shouldn't hurt the company's bottom line too much.
"For the most part, it's Indiana weather," she says. "You just have to be prepared for it."
