Officials Apprehensive About How IU Football May Affect Local COVID-19 Rates

The COVID-19 positivity rate for Monroe County is up to 3.7% for the week ending Oct. 16; that’s up from 2% from the prior week.

Lawrence, Brown, and Owen counties also saw significant increases in positivity rates.

“It’s not a red flag at this point, but it’s going up,” said Monroe County Health Administrator Penny Caudill.

The campus wide positivity rate decreased slightly from .80 to .50. However, officials are concerned fans may over-crowd local bars Saturday, since they will not be allowed to attend the Penn State-Indiana football game in person.

“Irresponsible activity will not be tolerated," said IU COVID-19 response team head Kirk Irwin. "We just can’t have it. There’s too much at stake."

IU Health says COVID hospitalizations are at their highest level since April and its hospital in Bedford is full.

Bed space remains at both IU Health Bloomington Hospital and Monroe Hospital.
