Monroe County Sheriff Brad Swain says a total of 12 inmates have tested positive for the Coronavirus, up from 4 earlier this week and last week.
50 out of the 200 inmates in the jail were tested. The positive cases were not in the general population.
“At this point those blocks are security blocks, so they are not moving out among inmates and other populations, and we don’t have any severe symptoms,” said Swain.
Sheriff Swain says the original four inmates who had the virus caught while they were incarcerated. All incoming inmates are screened for COVID-19 before being admitted to the jail.
“When any inmate can’t bond out and they have to be brought up through the jail population rather than the intake area on the first floor, they remain in isolation for 14 days,” Swain said.
This is the first time any inmate in the Monroe County Jail has had the coronavirus since the pandemic started.
