Indiana’s COVID-19 positivity rate has remained consistent following the post-Thanksgiving spike.
The Indiana State Department of Health reported Wednesday a seven-day positivity rate of 12.1% that has decreased only a percentage point from 13.1% on Dec. 5. The positivity rate peaked at 14% on Dec. 2, but for the majority of the month, it has not changed. Never before has the positivity rate remained this high and unfluctuating for so long.

Unlike positivity, newly reported cases, deaths and test numbers have decreases over December. The ISDH confirmed 4,731 new cases and 62 deaths, increasing state totals to 476,538 cases and 7,306 deaths. And Indiana has administered more than 5.3 million tests on 2.5 million Hoosiers. The recent decrease in testing might explain the subsequent decrease in confirmed cases, but the sustained positivity rate implies little change in overall viral spread.
More than 3,120 Hoosiers are hospitalized due to COVID-19, and they occupy 31.2% of ICU beds. Just 21% ICU beds remain available.
In Monroe County, the ISDH confirmed 34 new cases and two new deaths, totaling 7,599 cases and 87 deaths countywide. More than 215,000 tests have been administered with a seven-day positivity rate of 5.8%
