COVID-19 case, death and test numbers all dropped significantly following Christmas Day.
The Indiana State Department of Health reported Monday only 2,494 new cases, 43 new deaths, and 17,617 new tests — less than half the number of tests typically reported on a Monday. The new data increased state totals to 496,306 cases and 7,539 deaths.
Health officials have warned against analyzing preliminary data because it can take up to two weeks for the department to receive test results, but current data shows Indiana has reported about a 20% decrease in the average number of reported cases and deaths since Dec. 14.
Hoosiers with COVID-19 occupy nearly 30% of the state’s ICU beds with about a quarter of the intensive care beds still available. The most recent census shows 2,866 Indiana residents hospitalized due to the virus.
The state has administered more than 5.5 million tests with an 11.5% seven-day positivity rate that has decreased from 14% at the start of December.
In Monroe County, the ISDH reported 29 new cases and 89 newly tested individuals, increasing the county total to 7,837 cases and more than 219,000 tests. The death toll remained at 88. Monroe County currently has a 7.4% seven-day positivity rate.
