Indiana enters the new year with COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths trending down but cases rising.
The state’s COVID-19 hospital census fluctuates every day, but as of now, 2,836 Hoosiers are hospitalized with the virus compared to 3,460 on Nov. 30. And on Jan. 1, Indiana crossed the 8,000-death threshold, after recording fewer deaths than previous weeks. The state averaged 85 deaths a day on Dec. 14, but two weeks later, the average number of daily deaths has fallen below 70. But a post-Christmas surge has shown an increase in COVID-19 cases.
On Monday, the ISDH reported 3,630 new cases and 39 new deaths, raising the statewide totals to 529,688 cases and 8,150 deaths. The state has administered more that 5.8 million tests with a seven-day positivity rate of 15.3%.

COVID-19 patients occupy 30.4% of Indiana ICU beds with 26% of the ICU beds still available.
In Monroe County, the ISDH recorded 49 new cases, increasing the county total to 8,218 cases. The death toll remained at 98. The county has a 9% seven-day positivity rate and a total of 224,390 residents have been tested.
