Indiana’s seven-day positivity rate is nearly back to its peak, recorded at the start of December.
The Indiana Department of Health reported a 16.8% seven-day positivity rate on Dec. 2 — the highest positivity rate since April. As December played out, the positivity rate dropped to a low of 13.3%, but as of Thursday, Indiana’s seven-day positivity rate has returned to 16.4%. And preliminary data suggest the rate will continue to rise over the next few days.
IDOH reported Thursday 7,344 new cases and 81 new deaths, increasing state totals to 546,499 cases and 8,452 deaths. The average number of daily COVID-19 deaths has fallen from 86, the peak in mid-December, to 73 as of Jan. 1. Subsequently, the average number positive cases has risen since Christmas.

The state has administered nearly 6 million tests on more than 2.7 million Hoosiers.
More than 2,800 Hoosiers are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19, and they occupy 27.5% of state ICU beds. Just 21.1% of beds remain available.
In Monroe County, the IDOH reported 78 new cases and one new death, bringing county totals to 8,446 cases and 101 deaths. Monroe County has administered 229,630 tests with a seven-day positivity rate of 9.7%.
