The Monroe County Health Department is offering COVID-19 vaccines to those who schedule an appointment through the Indiana Department of Health.

Beginning Jan. 8, Hoosiers 80 and older are eligible to request a vaccine appointment online or by phone. Area 10 On Aging is also offering support to those who are having trouble registering.

Friday morning's initial registration period saw high traffic to the state's website, resulting in sometimes hour-long delays. IDOH urged patience for those seeking to make and appointment for the vaccine.

The two vaccine clinic locations in Monroe County will be at IU Health Bloomington Hospital and the Monroe County Convention Center. MCHD will administer the Moderna vaccine, which requires two shots — the second administered 28 days after the first.

An MCHD news release says the locations will be staffed in part by more than 200 volunteers, with support from the Monroe County Public Library, the Indiana National Guard Reserve and Chik-fil-A.
