A new strain of the virus that causes COVID-19 has been detected in Indiana, state health officials announced Monday.
The strain is the same as identified in the United Kingdom last fall. It is much more easily spread, but does not cause more severe infections, according to the Indiana Department of Health.
“It’s common for viruses to mutate, and we are seeing that occur with COVID-19,” State Health Commissioner Kris Box said. “Because this strain of the virus can be transmitted more easily, it’s more important than ever that Hoosiers continue to wear their masks, practice social distancing, maintain good hygiene and get vaccinated when they are eligible.”
More than 567,000 Indiana residents have contracted COVID-19 since the pandemic began early last year. The state has reported 8,643 deaths so far.
The new strain was identified through testing at the Department of Health laboratory and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
