Advocates Lobby For Stricter Laws For Public Interaction With Lions, Tigers And Bears

Animal rights advocates say the state needs stricter laws when it comes to people breeding wild animals and displaying them to the public.

And, while COVID – related items and a budget year will keep lawmakers busy at the statehouse this session, U.S. Humane Society Indiana State Director Samantha Morton says they will be focused on the Cub Protection Act- which would prohibit direct public contact with lions, tigers and bears.

“Indiana has a troubling past with cub breeding and display of tiger cubs, lion cubs and things of that nature and because of that we have really narrowed in on this issue,” Morton says.

Last year, the organization worked on a similar bill that prohibited direct contact with the public and dangerous animals and private possession of dangerous wild animals.  The bill was heard in committee, but did not get a vote.
